I suspect there is a faulty or improper cable being used. Do not connect a speaker-level cable (usually the back of the amp) from a guitar amplifier into your computer. You will fry your audio input.
Yes there is. Most likely, plugging it in directly with an adapter will result in an unbalanced signal (terrible buzz on the recording). You can buy a "passive direct box" for about $30 to run between your mic and the microphone jack on your computer. Of course, you will also need a program to record to on your computer (GarageBand for Mac, Audacity or Ardour for Linux, and Audacity or Adobe Audition for Windows). That's the basics. Good luck!
