HBO was not the first pay TV channel; it was launched in 1972 as the first premium cable network that offered uncut movies and original programming. However, the concept of pay TV dates back to the 1950s with various regional services. HBO's success, particularly with original content, helped popularize the pay TV model and set the stage for future networks.

Time Warner HBO, now part of Warner Bros. Discovery, is a premium cable and streaming television channel known for its original programming, including acclaimed series like "Game of Thrones," "Westworld," and various documentaries and films. Launched in 1972, HBO has gained a reputation for high-quality content and has won numerous awards. The channel operates on a subscription model, offering viewers exclusive access to movies and series without commercial interruptions. In addition to its cable service, HBO has expanded into streaming with HBO Max, providing on-demand access to its extensive library.

But as of now, it probably would not be on unless it was for a Halloween or Tim Burton special. Its not even on pay-per-view now, as far as I have seen.
It became a part of the basic subscription package of Dish Network and is located on the 9400 channel. So now you don't have to pay for it the extra 5 bucks.
