Well, kinda. The Ampex VR-1000 was first made in 1956 and it was about the size of a piano, BUT:
a) it wasn't a Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) because it didn't use cassettes. Instead, these early Video Tape Recorders (VTRs) used large reels of tape that had to be loaded into the recorder's mechanism by hand.
b) it wasn't actually the first video recorder, but it was the first successful one. The BBC tried to invent one and so did RCA, but these early recorders did not work very well and could only record a few minutes of video.
