A danger not often thought about is that when the iPod was more expensive than it is today, people would get mugged for them. It would be the trademark white earbuds that gave away what a person was listening to, making them easy targets.

Yet another possibility is any electronic device, including the iPod, that uses a lithium-ion battery. There was a period not long ago where there was some shoddy manufacturing done overseas involving impurities in the lithium liquid where there were some metal lithium shards contained within the battery. If the shards make contact, they can spark, causing the famous "exploding iPod/exploding laptop/exploding cell phone" you might have heard about in the news. But the odds of it are practically nil, which is why when it happens, it makes the news.

Another danger is that when you wear an iPod, you're totally unaware of your surroundings. This can be very dangerous.

If you are referring to the Ipod released and manufactured by Apple .inc there are not many harmful effects that occur from using the device.

Although Ipods and other MP3 players can cause ear problems such as hard hearing or deafness. Going past your ear canal, anvil, hammer, and stirrup sound/ vibrations run to your cochlea which contains many little hairs which sends nerve signals to your brain that allow you to hear. If you overdo or over work your ear by listening to loud music constantly those hairs will eventually begin to fall off and your hearing becomes worse and worse. If this continues all the hairs located in the cochlea will fall off causing you to become deaf. Luckily, Apple has put an option on Ipods which allow you to set a limit on how high you want the volume to go. So no more over loud music to harm your ears.

Another effect that may come from Ipods is a condition called CVS. Although it has not been proven CVS or Computer vision syndrome might cause eyes to become blurry or even cause double vision. Now don't be afraid to stare at your Ipod to change the song CVS has been mostly focused on computer screens which are large and require you to stare at them for extended periods of time. But lets say you are using your new "Ipod Touch" and you are watching a 2 hour long movie this same idea might start to take effect if you do this constantly everyday.

Overall nothing to serious when listening or using your MP3 player as long as you use the right precautions when functioning the device. So have fun and enjoy your music.
