The first truly successful headphones were made by Nathaniel Baldwin. Baldwin made the headphones by hand in his kitchen and later he sold them to the U.S navy. Sensitive headphones like those were soon being manufactured by Brandes in 1919 and were commonly used for early radio work. The headphones were made by moving iron drivers (either single ended or balanced armature). Old headphones like those had very poor comfort and the quality was crude. Today's headphones have come a long way since then and seem to keep improving.
