Like many high technologies, it's a bit blurred; the D1 standard for recording digital video was defined in 1986 and early systems using it were released in 1992 - they were huge and expensive (around $160,000) with a separate tape deck. The first device that could be described as a consumer digital camcorder is probably Sony's VX1000 introduced in 1995 using the DV standard.
