Fantine sat bolt upright, leaning on both hands with her arms stiff, she looked at Jean Valjean, she looked at Javert, she looked at the nun, she opened her mouth to speak, a rattle came out from deep in her chest, her teeth began to chatter, she stretched her arms in anguish, convulsively opening her hands and groping all around her like someone drowning; then she suddenly sank back on her pillow. Her head hit the headboard and fell forward on her chest, with her mouth gaping, her eyes open and glazed.

She was dead.

Fantine has had to give up her child to get a job, from which she is fired and forced to sell her own body, until Jean Valjean finds her. Valjean, an ex-convict, is also called Monsieur Madeleine and he has changed his ways to become the beloved Mayor of Montreuil-sur-mer. Valjean promises to bring Fantine her child, Cosette, but fails to do so. Javert, a policeman, arrests Valjean in the hospital right by Fantine's bed.
