The main aims of education in the Vedic period were:

Physical and intellectual development. It was believed that a strong mind could only be in a strong body. So, it was very important to keep the body strong, as well as the mind.

Religious and spiritually. There was strong belief in both moral and spiritual development. Therefore, education bore a spiritual atmosphere and students were taught to have a religious mind.

Emphasis upon knowledge and experiences. There was emphasis on learning from experience.

Sublimation of instinct. They were taught to turn away from instinct and being a slave to their senses by being able to control materialistic and basic tendencies.

Preservation and spread of culture. They also taught preservation and passing on of traditional thought, actions, manner and vocations.

Promotion of social efficiency happiness. They were taught to be socially efficient by learning different branches of knowledge in professions and industries.

Development of character & personality. They were taught on correct conduct with teaching based on the lives, characters and ideals of great people. The aim was to develop self control, self confidence, self disciline, obedience, love, sympathy, etc.

Immediate and ultimate answer. They prepared people for life based on their own immediate needs. They didn't aim to prepare people for this life, but for the liberation of their souls.
