Laura's books are historic fiction. Although the content follows the factual events of her early life very closely, there are differences which precludes them from being purely historical. For example, the sequence of events is not always in order, especially in the early books, which has Carrie accompanying them on the journey when she was not yet born in reality. Also, Nellie Oleson is a composite character drawn from three different unpleasant girls Laura knew. There are also large chunks omitted from the chronology, such as the period of time the Ingall's lived in Iowa. Also omitted is the birth and death of the only Ingall's boy, but Laura never mentioned him in her books. Laura has also filled in the gaps to make her stories interesting for children to read, but this also prevents the books being strictly factual.
