There are no real types of vampires so you can safely say that they were made up. Answer#2: There are indeed real vampires on this earth, and yes you can safely say that Stregoni Benefici is a real type of vampire.
In mythology, the Stregoni Benefici are a type of vampire, not a particular individual. In Stephanie Meyer's novels, Carlisle Cullen is supposedly the source of the Stregoni Benefici myth, from his time in Volterra, Italy. That would make all who follow Carlisle's "vegetarian life-style" also Stregoni Benefici. Meyers never claims one particular character in any of the books is *the* Stregoni Benefici. All "good" vampires are Stregoni Benefici.
From my understanding, Stregoni Benefici is an Italian breed of vampire that, unlike its fellow blood suckers, is predominately good-natured and kind, and is also the natural enemy of all evil vampires. Stephenie Meyer, in her personal correspondence #4 with the Twilight Lexicon, indicates that the 'Stregoni Benefici' is, in fact, Carlisle Cullen. He spent a significant amount of time in Italy with the Volturi, and the legend of the Stregoni Benefici was obviously born out of this.
In a strict translation, Stregoni Benefici means "beneficient wizard". Vampire myth says that the stregoni benefici were good vampires who fought against all bad vampires. Some myths say they were blessed by Catholic priests for this purpose, which would kind of feed into the fact that Carlisle's father was a minister. Stregone Benefico would be the singular form of Stregoni Benefici (plural).
Many think if isStregoni Benefici, but Stregoni Benefici is the name of an Italian vampire myth that Carlisle created himself, as it talks about good vampires that do not kill humans. Carlisle's full name before he became a vampire was Carlisle Cullen, as his middle name is not listed anywhere.
