Many of his experiences are described in his books. Gary Paulsen encountered several situations during his childhood where he was molested. The first was outside an apartment he shared with his mother in Chicago. The second was when he was living in Manilla and a servant molested him. Also, he moved quite often and lived in various situations, probably because both parents where alcoholics who also were not monogamous or responsible. He never felt like he connected with the man his mother referred to as his father. In his late teens, he survived on small part time jobs. He was impoverished for much of his early adult life and spent years as an alcoholic himself.
