Christopher has created elves that are agnostic and/or in some cases atheistic, he has very devoutly religious dwarves and humans, and his main character, Eragon, appears to also be seeking answers about his faith and beliefs. This has lead many to feel that he is using his characters as a platform for his own beliefs. However, Christopher has stated in public interviews, particularly a 2008 Herald Sun interview, that he will not discuss his own beliefs in public, but that he will say that the beliefs he has given his characters do NOT necessarily represent what he himself believes. He states that he wanted to give his characters a "well-rounded" set of beliefs and belief systems to make them more interesting to readers, and adds that he feels that it shouldn't matter to readers what his own private personal beliefs are. He emphasizes that this is an imaginary world with imaginary beings, and insists that people should not get so caught up in trying to figure out if he is inserting any "hidden agendas".
