George Orwell was just a pen name for Eric Blair born in 1903. He chose this name because George was the patron saint of England and Orwell was th name of a river he liked. He was a heavy smoker most of his life which didn't help his weak lungs. He lived part of his life on a remote island in the Hebrides, called Jura. He remarried four years after his first wife died in a minor surgery. In 1949 he provided a list of 37 names to the Information Research Department of people he thought might be Communists.
