Through his writing, CD drew public attention to some of the many wrongs of his time: social stratification, grinding and hopeless poverty, throngs of orphans arising from rampant disease and life-threatening childbirth, which resulted from lack of or inadequate medical care and the filth the poor were forced to live in. Personally, he sat on several boards which addressed these issues. And he and fellow philantropist Angela Burdett-Coutts funded and worked at a sort of halfway-home for protitutes. They were able to wean many girls from alcohol or drugs then place them in service in rural areas.

Charles Dickens is known for raising awareness of social issues such as poverty, child labor, and class inequality through his novels. By shining a light on these injustices, he helped to bring about positive change and initiate reforms during the Victorian era. His works also encouraged readers to empathize with the less fortunate and inspired compassion and charity within society.
