For the best and most complete answer, you really should read Stephen's book called "On Writing". In it he tells all about his interest in writing. But the short answer may be that he has always been interested in writing. He went to my high school in Lisbon Falls, Maine and while there he published an underground newsletter that slammed faculty and students. He made the mistake (in my opinion) of slamming one of the best teachers in the school, Miss Margitan, who was also the vice principal. For that he was punished and made to work at the town newspaper called the Lisbon Enterprise. Now, it is little known, and Stephen himself still does not know this, that the editor of the newspaper was the John Gould, the famous Maine humorist. Stephen writes that he knew it was John Gould, but didn't think it was the real John Gould. Anyway, at the Enterprise he learned to love the printed word, and the rest is history.
