Otto was near the breaking point in early January 1945, and went to the sick bay - a very dangerous place to be in concentration camp. A friend he had made sent a Dutch doctor to see him, and the doctor said: "Come to the hospital tomorrow morning, and I will get you admitted - it is much safer there". This was done, and Otto was still in the hospital when the camp was liberated by the Russians at the end of January.
