The woman got scared and started yelling which made Lennie hold on tighter when George finally got him to let go they had to run because the girl ad gone around saying Lennie had raped her so they had to run away and leave weed.
In weed, George and Lennie have to escape because George grabbed on to a young girls dress and the girl said he raped her. George is a special person. He is drawn in my things that are soft and feel nice. If you read on in the book you'll find out about his obsession with soft things.

Lennie saw a girl in a red dress. He touched it, she panicked and Lennie would not let go. The girl was scared and told people that she had been raped by Lennie, even though this was a lie. Lennie and George had to run away.
George tells Slim that Lennie inadvertently scared a girl in Weed by grabbing her dress, leading to a misunderstanding that got them in trouble. He explains that Lennie didn't mean any harm but often doesn't realize his own strength, causing unintentional trouble. Slim listens sympathetically and understands their situation.
When George confides in Slip, he adds the detail that the weed they are smuggling is laced with Fentanyl, making it more dangerous than they initially thought. Slip is shocked and concerned about the increased risks involved.
