When Madame Schachter screams for the first time on the train to Auschwitz, people react with shock, confusion, and fear. They are unsure of what is happening and initially try to quiet her, but her intense fear and despair eventually start to affect those around her. This scene foreshadows the horrors they are about to experience in the concentration camp.
At first they believed her screams of "Fire!" Then they beat her. Then they gagged her. Eventually, she, and her son, were killed by German soldiers.
The tried to tie her up and gag her at first, but when she escaped, they decided they had to do something more. They hit her every time she began screaming until she stopped. Her little boy had to watch the whole thing, but he held her hand when he could and tried to calm her.
Madame Schacter is a character of the book "Night", written by Elie Wiesel. On the train to Auschwitz, Elie meets Madame Schacter who has having visions of fire. She constantly warns the people on the train of the flames that awaits them. Her words prove be true as Elie steps off the train and witnesses the flames of the crematorium and the smell of burning flesh...
She is saying that she sees fire and then the guys first confront her by telling her to quiet down, that didn't work out so they tied her up, that still didn't work out so they ended up hitting her and knocking her out so that she will stop.
Madame Bovary was written by Gustave Flaubert.
