The process of watercolor washing is fairly simple, but required some quick action on the artist's part.

You begin with a blank sheet of paper, preferably watercolor paper or some other thick (textured or non-textured) paper. Thinner papers can waste away due to the water.

Next, select a flat, broad brush and apply a thin coat of water all over the sheet. Thin, as in you should not see small puddles of water shining around the paper. It should be like a lamination.

Then, presuming you're painting a landscape (the wash technique is most suited for backgrounds), take a dab of fairly undiluted paint on your brush and then - this is where the quick action comes in - you can choose to dab it over the paper, or move it in sweeping motions, or any other technique that might help you get your desired texture. For a sky, you can sweep over a coat of blue, and then make dabs on it with pale yellow.

Add the foreground after the wash dries. However, if you want to add elements blended with the background (such as foggy mountains in perspective), paint them over with relatively just darker shades over the wash while it's still wet.

Hope that helped.
