That short introduction you see on the back cover of a book jacket - or in an anthology of short stories - is called an author bio (short for biography). It's just a brief explanation of who the author is, and what other works they have written. You also use your bio when writing a query letter, or with a cover letter for your manuscript. Here's what you need in your bio: * What your name is - this does not have to be the one you were born with, as many authors write under a pen name that they have invented for themselves * Any personal information you wish to include - many authors tell whether they are married and have children, what pets they have, and in which part of the country they live. * What else you have written, especially if you write in several genres - this lets the reader look for your other works and enjoy them, too When writing your bio, pretend you are writing a television commercial - you have to impart maximum information in minimum time, so condense down to the basics. Here's a sample bio that Darksyde has used for several anthologies: J.D.Ryan is a diehard curmudgeon who lives in the backwoods of South Carolina with several opinionated cats. He has published short stories in . J.D.Ryan enjoys sarcasm, witty repartee, and annoying small-minded fools.
