Tabert had published a version of Jack and the Beanstalk which he'd put onto paper, however it was probably a story passed down by oral tradition for a long time before that especially as it bares great resemblance to a cornish legend of Jack the Giant killer who supposedly lived around the same time as King Arthur.
''Jack and the Beanstalk'' is a traditional English fairy tale. The author is unknown as it has been passed down through oral tradition for many years.

Benjamin Tabart wrote the first print version in 1807. However, it was a much older story, and it seems that the version rewritten by Joseph Jacobs in 1890 was closer to the original. In the original, Jack was a thief and murderer, but Benjamin Tabart made the giant the bad guy in his version, thus transforming Jack into a hero. Joseph Jacobs version removed the revisionism.
