The reason some jump to the conclusion is because of the nature of his writing in his books, such as Of Mice and Man and East of Eden. East of Eden has a gay marriage, Mice and Man has a gay sex scene. The fact that Kazan, a known homosexual, produced the screen version of East of Eden does not help. The leading star's (Jimmy Dean) homosexual lifestyle creates further skepticism.

However, he was married three times during his lifetime. He spent the last 18 years of his life with his wife, Elaine Anderson Steinbeck. Whether he liked the boys remains conjecture.
