The moon is brighter and overpowers the star, but Poe finds her cold ("On her cold smile; Too cold- too cold for me-") and controlling ("'Mid planets her slaves"). He turns towards the star. This woman is means more to him than the other and he loves her ("And more I admire Thy distant fire, Than that colder, lowly light")
