The main theme - and storyline - is a critique of the contemporary English legal system. Much too complicated and even obsolete, it could prove unfair and arbitrary, whereas the legal proceedings were utterly dehumanising. The life of several characters, interwoven in the court battle for a legacy, is partially or completely destroyed by the legal system and some corrupt lawyers (barristers?). I would consider the human traits depicted in the novel quite secondary (one character's inability to live his live outside the dreams of enrichment due to the legacy he was due, which finally led to his death and destitution for instance).
