London wrote various stories about ships and the sea. He wrote "Stories of Ships and the Sea," a collection of short stories involving ships and sea-life. He also wrote "The Sea-Wolf," a story about a gentleman stuck on a seal hunting schooner captained by a monster of a man who'd just as easily kill him as employ him on the ship. No-one can best him as he is the very model of a perfectly built body. The only thing that keeps the protagonist gentleman of the story alive is the captain's interest of knowledge and books, He enjoys having the company of someone who can actually converse with him on an intellectual level. I'm not positive what specific book was influenced by London's time on the Sophie Sutherland, but he most likely drew from his experiences when writing both of them.
