ANNE SULLIVAN MACY was best known for her remarkable ability to teach Helen Adams Keller of Tuscumbia, Alabama (1887-1936). She was blind as i child due to an eye infection called Trachoma. She had brown eyes and slightly curly hair when her and her brother Jimmie were sent to the Tewksbury, MA State poorhouse. She was only 10. By the time Anne began working with Keller at age 20, she had almost 9 operations on her eyes. Hence, she wore sunglasses to keep the sun out of her eyes. She often wore her hair up in a brown braided bun and her Irish facial features were very noticable including her famous Irish accent. When she grew much older, her hair became a white shade with streaks of gray mixed into it. She had a fairly large nose and pink lips as well as two very gentle palms and she often wore long Victorian gowns for when Helen made speeches or went to school.

Over all, she was a beautiful pionner girl of the mid 19th century and early 20th.

If you aren't satisfied with the description written above, look her up and ask a historian. You may also want to read ''Beyond the Miracle Worker'' a bio on Macy and her journey w/ Helen Keller! i don't know the author's name. the description above was based upon black-and-white photographs. THANKS!
