Missionaries taught the Native Americans at missions to convert to Christianity, adopt European cultural practices, attend church services, learn European languages, and engage in agriculture and other forms of labor.
The indians were treated horribly, they were beaten by missionaries if they didn't do things right.
Missions
Missionaries have worked in the Amazon for many years. They supply medicine to treat the diseases brought by the white people, which continue to kill hundreds of Indians. They also teach the Indians to read and write so they can better protect themselves. Missionary airplanes fly supplies into the missions and in emergencies take people out of the jungle. ( I believe! )
So they can teach the CA Indians their religious.

The missions were open to all. The only people that were usually around when a mission was started were the Spanish missionaries and Indians.
This depends entirely on the type of missionaries they are and what organization sent them. Many missionaries are church-planting or proselyting, meaning that they were sent by a church or ministry in order to gain converts to that faith organization. These missionaries will teach the doctrines and practices of their sending organization while supporting or building a local congregation. Other missionaries are service missionaries and focus their teaching and service in areas such as health care, education, farming, or building. Many missionaries do both service and preaching. As an example of what some missionaries might teach, look at the following links:Living Word Missions Missionary ManualHope Mission Trips Evangelism ResourcesUnited Methodist Missionary Training ManualEvangelical Covenant Church Missions ManualPreach my Gospel: Manual for Mormon MissionariesManual for Episcopal Youth Missions
