According to Edith's closest friend in Auschwitz, who survived, Edith suffered an emotional breakdown when Anne and Margot were selected to be sent to Bergen-Belsen. From that point on, she began to hoard food, and eating none of it herself, saving it, as she said, for her husband and children who needed it more than she did. She was in sick bay toward the end, and eventually stopped talking or responding to those who talked to her. She died of starvation and exhaustion in early January, 1945.
