The Enchanted Wood is the first of the Faraway Tree trilogy. It tells of how 3 young children were to move to the country with their parents. When they get there they live a a cottage that sits on the edge of a wood. On investigation the children meet Mr Whiskers a chief brownie and help him retrieve belongings stolen from him by a wicked pixie. During this adventure they discover The Faraway Tree. When they climb it they find little houses cut in to the tree where the tree folk dwell. On continuing Jo the oldest child makes his way to the top branch of the tree and sees a yellow ladder that appears to disappear through a hole in the cloud. he climbs it and is snatched away by a wicked snowman who lives in the land of Ice and Snow. Jos' 2 sisters enlist the help of Moonface one of the tree dwellers and they go after Jo and rescue him. Through the book the children visit the tree and the strange lands that come to the top of the great oak.
