Freedom may be personified by describing it as a Patriot from the revolutionary war. Saying that freedom helped to push the soldiers to defeat the British would be personifying the idea of freedom. To personify something, the writer must give the concept/quality/idea traits that may be found in a person, or make the concept/quality/idea behave as a person.
