Several large, burly men appear at your house and remove your liver.

Seriously, they debit the check immediately. As in on-the-spot, sucking the money out of your account as if they were a heroin addict and they needed it for their next fix. It's called Check 21, otherwise known as the "Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act" (no, I'm not kidding). I got hit with it when I was going to be paid tomorrow, but needed medicine tonight (silly me, for getting sick). The pharmacist finally put the check through as 'Other' (instead of 'Personal', I guess).

Another corporate, blood-sucking way of giving you as little as possible while extracting the maximum. Thank you, George W Bush.

Shaws typically accepts personal checks, but policies may vary by location. Should the policy fee be returned if a renewal policy was issued and then the issuer received a request for flat cancel?

If the policy is being cancelled retroactive to it's effective date as if it never existed then yes, it should be returned. This assumes that the policy fee was charged on the renewal. If you had a policy for the initial term and they have chosen not to renew you should not expect a return of your policy fee for the initial term.
