This term was used in Stephen King's book, "The Dead Zone" which was made into a movie starring Christopher Walken, later a tv series with Anthony Michael Hall. The dead zone refers to the part of the (human) brain that lies dormant because we haven't learned how to use it In the movie, the main character suffers from brain damage from a head injury and his brain rewires itself (we call it plasticity in the health field) to use other parts of the brain to compensate for the damaged parts.
