Jose Rizal used the surname "Rizal" instead of "Mercado" when he enrolled at Ateneo to evade the discrimination against Chinese-Filipinos at that time. The surname "Rizal" was suggested by his brother, Paciano, who derived it from the Spanish province of Rizal.
Paciano is rizal's brother
Jose Mercado, the father of Jose Rizal, chose to use "Rizal" as a surname for their family in 1850 in compliance with the decree issued by Governor-General Narciso Claveria, which required Filipinos to adopt Spanish surnames for census purposes. Rizal's full name is José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda.
Paciano was very protective of Jose Rizal and acted as the latter's second father. It was Paciano who brought 9-year old Jose from their home in Calamba, Laguna to Binan, Laguna so Jose could continue his studies in Latin and Spanish. Later, it was Paciano who brought Jose to Manila so he could study at the Ateneo Municipal. Paciano helped Jose look for a lodging house in Sta. Cruz. Much later, it was also Paciano, together with an uncle, who financed Jose Rizal's trip to Spain, without their parents' knowledge. Actually, Paciano was not known as a Rizal but as a Mercado. He used the family's first surname, Mercado, while studying under Father Burgos, one of the three Filipino priests beheaded by the Spaniards. When the surname Mercado came under the Spanish authorities' suspicion, Paciano advised Jose to use the family's second surname, Rizal.
Paciano Rizal died on 1930-04-13.
Answer: Remember the incident of the GOMBURZA? Paciano was the assistant of Father Burgos in the fight for the FILIPINIZATION of the parishes. Since Paciano Mercado was known as Father Burgos' favorite student and helper, Paciano advised Jose to use the family's second surname, Rizal, because the surname MERCADO had already come under the suspicion of the Spanish authorities. The main reason why he changed his surname, was to keep his family safe from the Spaniards' suspicious noses. And that's why he changed Mercado to Rizalhe wanted to keep his family safe from spaniards
Paciano Rizal was born on March 7, 1851. He was the older brother of the national hero of the Philippines, Jose Rizal.
