I just read it and was a little confused but I looked it up also. It seems that he is a soldier in the war that was badly effected from a bomb perhaps, which explains why he always stops when he hears a plane. This damaged his nerves so that he cannot feel pain or heat. He has a growing paranoia and he feels that his wife is unsympathetic and keeps moving light switches and door knobs. I think the war is slowly driving him crazy. I'm still not sure why Edna's friends Mary was in her bed and why he had a knife, but I think he is just going mad. Mary picks up the phone to presumably ring a mental asylum for him. Edna fled because he was crazy and she probably feared him. I hope this answered you question fully :)
