snail shells can be brown or gray, sometimes speckled. i heard they can be green too, but i have never seen it. the shell is part of the snail, a hardened skin, so it usually looks somewhat like the snail. they don't have to look spinny or spiraly, but sometimes are. it may have something to do with what they eat. . . maybe.
