The social issues surrounding the vast impact of enforced poverty, use of the workhouse and the prisons to punish people who could not get employment especially in London of the time, the ignorance of those in the higher class who felt that the poor were just cut throats and beggars. The government of the time claiming that the scale of need experienced across Britain of the time was just being inflated to cause problems and of course the desperate need to children many whom would not see teenage years because of diphtheria, dysentery, tuberculosis, fever and starvation. He fought for the right to all children to have education and not be expected to work for a pittance by those that could afford to pay adults to do the same work.
