There were many scandals during his time, because of his writing style and also because of his theories concerning Aesthetics and Life.

He was first famous for being himself, prior to his writing. He called himself a "Professor of Aesthetics" and invited himself to social parties. Soon he was known by upper class societies and invited to their gatherings, to talk about his theory of Aesthetics.

With that, he also gave lectures in universities (university back then being only open to men of decent to high society...the common labourer certainly had no place there).

Yet the biggest scandal that ruined his life is the rumour that he was a homosexual. Certain writings seemed to show that Oscar Wilde was a homosexual. People have speculated that his work, Picture of Dorian Gray, was actually an autobiographical work of his own life. Though that remains to be seen even to this day.
