Dante Alighieri married Gemma di Manetto Donati around 1293. Gemma came from an influential Florentine family, which helped Dante establish himself in society. The marriage produced several children, but Dante's relationship with Gemma was strained, and he later wrote about his unrequited love for Beatrice Portinari.
