When Charles was 12 and shortly before his father was imprisoned for debt, his mother found him a job through a cousin at Warren's Blacking Factory and made him live in a garret nearby. When his father was released a few months later and the rest of the family was reunited, his mother wanted Charles to continue where he was; his father uncharacteristically put his foot down and brought Charles home over his mother's protests.

Simple. As a child, you should just follow your parents. Nothing makes your parents, specifically your mum, happier than to see her child listen to her in respect. All mums want to see children respect them. If you respect them by listening to what they say, obey their orders, etc., you will have a great chance of getting a better relationship with your mum. It's just like a friend to friend relationship; if you respect the guy, he'll respect you. But if you're ever gonna be good to your mum, do it not only to have a better relationship with your mum, but also for a clean guilt free connection with your mum.
If she is not your mum then there is no relationship unless your father married her in that case she is your stepmother.
Charles Darwin had one wife and that was his cousin from his mum's side of the family - Emma Wedgewood.
