Poe had published three collections of his poetry by 1831 to disappointing sales, so he decided to start writing short stories. By late 1839, he had written 25 short stories that had been published or were about to be published in magazines, but he had been unsuccessful in gettting a collection published. He finally found a publisher to agree to publish the 25 stories in two volumes under the title 'Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque.' The tales included:
