In the books Laura tends to favor red and brown, although this might have been Ma's influence, as she seemed to feel that certain colors suited Laura's dark hair colour, while others were better suited for her sister Mary's golden hair. In On the Banks of Plum Creek, Laura and Mary are thrilled to find that Ma has accidentally given Laura blue ribbons and Mary pink ribbons, as both are tired of the other.

In Little House in the Big Woods, On the Banks of Plum Creek and By the Shores of Silver Lake, Laura's dresses are consistently described respectively as "dark, wine-coloured red calico", "golden-brown flannel trimmed with red braid" and "red-sprigged on brown"; Mary's, alternatively, are "a china-blue pattern", "dark blue wool" and "blue-sprigged on grey".

In Little House on the Prairie Pa brings each girl a black hairband with a coloured star carved into it from Independence; again Laura's is red and Mary's blue. Later on in the series Laura receives a red and gold autograph album from Ma and Pa; Carrie receives a blue one.

However, In These Happy Golden Years Laura earns enough money to buy several yards of brown poplin to make herself a dress, which is then trimmed with blue ribbon which matches her eyes. Besides the ribbon incident mentioned in Plum Creek, Laura seems fairly content with the colours she wears, so I think it's safe to say that they were her favourites, possibly because they suited her best.
