What was Machiavelli's purpose in writing The Prince?

For practical reasons, Il Principe was written to Lorenzo di Medici who had recently risen to become ruler of Florance with the help of his cousin who was currently pope. This abolished the pre-existing Republic in which Machiavelli held a very high level "cabinet position". As a result of this association, Machiavelli was forced out of his position and moved into a farmhouse outside of the city limits. The prince is written in order to curry favor with Lorenzo by attempting to write a handbook for rulers. Although he had written extensively in the discourses about the superior nature of republics, the Prince only talks about absolute monarchs and their consolidation and maintaining of power.

Machiavelli wrote the prince to get his job back. he lost his job because the midci were being killed off and they had upset the people. well two cousins who were raised as brothers had run away to be safe but there was a reward for both of their heads so they were constantly on the move. a friend of theirs told them to gather an army and go back to florence, Italy and take it back so they did but when they got there an army was waiting for them and the leader of the army was Nicolo Machiavelli. when the medici cousins won the battle the oldest became pope and the younger was in training to be the pope and people welcomed them back with open arms because thhe city was not doing well. when the oldest became pope he had Machiavelli fired and since he had a lot of free time on his hands, he wanted his job back and he had no artistic talent only knowledge, he wrote a book on how to unify Italy. he had originaly dedicated the book to Giuliano, duke of Nemours but when he died and his son took over he re-dedicated the book to Lorenzo, duke of Urbino but the book had the opposite effect, lorenzo said what he proposed was evil and basically unholy so he was pretty much banished (at least from his job). his namme is where we get the term Machiavellian from. Machiavellian means being or acting in accordance with the principles of government analyzed in Machiavelli's The Prince, in which political expediency is placed above morality and the use of craft and deceit to maintain the authority and carry out the policies of a ruler is described.
