She was a marine biologist and she was also a writer in her free time. She enjoyed writing from a remarkably young age. She thought she wanted to major in writing but in January 1928 she switched her major to Marine Biology. She wrote about the environment and pesticides.
For all intents and purposes she founded Ecology in the public eye with her books such as the Silent Spring, which brought an uproar against toxic pesticides killing off bird life and other collateral damage. she also wrote The Sea Around Us, and originallky in professional life was an Oceanographer or at least a marine-oriented (Not on the Cousteau level) biologist. as far as is known she and M. Cousteau never met. Legit oceanographers like M. Paul Budker of the Paris institute- no mere museum scientst here,, he did go on whaling expeditions as a scientific observer!-sneered at Cousteau as something of a charlatan akin to the phony explorer family the so-called Flying Hutchinsons with their camouflaged amphibious planes. The Hutchinson tribe was grounded by hot water from the Chidlren"s Aid society as they were using kids in film stunts which were hazardous and also went into vaudeville with status violations. PS the fictional Captain Spaulding may have been a take-off on Mr. Hutchinson! Spaulding was a character done by Groucho Marx.
