The Popish Plot was a fictitious conspiracy concocted in the late 17th century in England that alleged a Catholic plot to assassinate King Charles II and replace him with his Catholic brother, James. This plot fueled anti-Catholic sentiment and led to widespread hysteria, resulting in the execution of innocent Catholics and the passing of repressive anti-Catholic laws.
