There is no indication that he was gay. He married his cousin Virginia who was aged only 13 at the time. He was very much in love with his wife, and very heartbroken when she died.

It was actually his love for his wife that helped 'undo' him. When she died of tuberculosis, he tried to drown it out with alcohol. It was later, right before his wedding to his never-to-be second wife, that he died.
