technical concepts pioneered in thought by Jules Verne: ( vehicles stated where appropriate: Space flight, ( from the earth to the Moon). The use of plywood and composite materials for aircraft construction ( discussed in some detail in Master of the World), wire-guided missiles ( one of his later novels, about a secret floating base). The wholeale usage and modernization brought about by electricity, radio and telephone ( various novels) He helped popularize, but certainly did not invent, the 24 hour clocks- these in use on the Nautilus- oh yes Submarines. Caravans and something like Tanks ( The House of Vapors). On the negative side Verne did not discuss extra-terrestrial life forms, though he theorized the moon once had an atmosphere and at one time supported life- something other Science Fiction writers have expanded on. quite a haul from old Jules. the surname , more properly LaVerne, means spring time!

1) The submarine (20,000 Leagues under the Sea) 2) The aircraft (Master of the World) 3) The spacecraft (From Earth to Moon) Contributor's note: Verne was inspired to write 20,000 Leagues under the Sea after watching the US inventor Robert Fulton sink a ship in the Seine River with his submarine, called the Nautilus. The submarine which Verne wrote about was also called the Nautilus, but it was electric powered and a lot more fancy than any existing submarine in the world until about a century later. Also: Flight with balloons existed in Verne's day, but his aircraft, called the Albatross, was a gigantic powered machine which was also about a century ahead of its time. And: Rockets were in existence before Verne, but they would not be advanced enough to carry men into space for about another century.
