In most European countries - very frugal! In the UK, the more so as the country was under a severe blockade and the English soil is not too nourishing. In most countries, food was rationalised and one needs a lot of imagination to replace butter, sugar, oil, coffee, turkey/chicken/all meat, in fact, onions, spices and so on. I should know, I've been through this in the late 80s.
