She was well known in her circle of friends and family, but she refused to publish the vast majority of her work (13 poems out of almost 2000 were published, and all anonymously). Instead, she chose to keep most of the poetry she wrote in books as leafs at her house or to send them in letters to people with whom she corresponded. She was pressured to publish and informed by many people that she was a very good poet but she had several personal reasons why she chose not to publish.

Because the vast majority of her work went unpublished during her lifetime she was only reached her height of fame after she died and other people took it upon themselves to publish her work. That being said, she was from an affluent family and well known for both her poetry and her eccentric personality. She's been called "The madwoman in the attic" and other similar names due to the fact that she was practically a shut-in by the end of her life. Preferring to keep her own company as it were.

So I guess to answer your question: No she was not overly famous during her lifetime, but she was understood by the literary circle and those she was close to to be a great poet who aught to have been published and famous.
