She sold Grey Gardens a year after her mother died under the condition that it not be demolished. She went on to live in New York City, where she had a cabaret act at the Reno Sweeney for two weeks, Montreal, California, and finally Bal Harbour, Florida. She surrounded herself with friends and family, had an active social life, and swam in the ocean almost everyday, even up in her 80's. She died of a heart attack in January of 2002.
