Poe was left an orphan at the age of 3 and was adopted by a wealthy and childless merchant named John Allan. He lived in England from 1815-20. He went to the University of Virginia in 1826, but he dropped out of school and by 1827 was living in Boston and began writing. He enlisted in 1827 and rose to Sgt. major by 1829. In 1830 he was admitted to West Point, but was dismissed from there. By 1831 he had his 3 book of poems published and had moved to Baltimore.

Poe attended the University of Virginia and the US Military Academy at West Point, but he did not graduate from either institution. Poe entered the University of Virginia founded by Thomas Jefferson with less than enough money from his foster father to pay for one year, but he left the university after that first year because his foster father refused to pay his gambling debts. His foster father then refused to help Poe pay for tuition. So out of fear and necessity Poe joined the US Army under an assumed name. Later he went to West Point, but left by deliberately breaking rules and being dismissed after a court martial found him guilty. He attended the University of Virginia, 1926 He enlisted in the US Army, 1927-29 He attended the US Military Academy at West Point, 1930-31
